Family intrigue, love and tragedy combine to create the ultimate drama in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This exciting play is a wonderful vehicle for young actors to learn the truly beautiful language of Shakespeare and tell a classic story with a modern take. Rosana Schutte is thrilled to be directing this production in a Spring Production and opening the young actors at The Artists’ Studio to performing this most important genre of theatre. Romeo and Juliet offers a stirring opportunity to achieve a milestone in a young actor’s theatre education. A lasting staple of high school English classes and on the Indiana Standard Reading List, Romeo and Juliet was written by Shakespeare early on in his career, most likely in 1594 or 1595. Shakespeare's tragic drama of the "star-crossed" young lovers is an extraordinary work. In fact, Romeo and Juliet was an experimental stage piece at the time of its composition, featuring several radical departures from long-standing conventions. This work has been interpreted on stage and screen in various ways and set in a variety of time frames. Our production will be set in contemporary time and will emphasize the universal themes of love, vengeance, loyalty and betrayal by drawing parallels to today’s world. No previous experience with Shakespeare is required to participate in this youth production and young actors are encouraged to expand their theatre craft. For ages 11-19.
The norm is to think of Romeo and Juliet as a great love story, but the underbellyof this work is rife with the emotions of growing pains in a world that is made mad by adult righteousness. The universal quality of Shakespeare’s tragedy is in the ultimate recognition of clutching to folly without knowing the consequences until too late. Yet there is the hope that the death of young Romeo and Juliet is not a death of love in the world. They become the unfortunate sacrifice required to stimulate an understanding of the need for a deeper love in humanity.
